Mifflinburg Student Member of Winning Dairy Handlers Team |

Marissa Ewing |
Marissa Ewing of New Berlin, was a member of
the first place Pennsylvania FFA Dairy

Exposition held in West Springfield,
Massachusetts. She was selected to represent
Pennsylvania by her placing at this past
summer's FFA Activities Week competition at
Penn State. The Mifflinburg FFA Sophomore
placed sixth individually at the Big E. She
was scored on her appearance, poise, ability
to move and correctly setup various dairy
animals during the competition. She and her
teammates were recognized at an awards
banquet held in Springfield, Massachusetts
following the competition. The Eastern
States Exposition or Big E serves as the
state fair for New England. The competition
was open to FFA members from Ohio and the

Lady Wildcats Capture State Gold |
For almost four decades, Three Dog
Night’s popular tune “One” with its
downtrodden lyrics seemed to have past the
test of time. In fact, the 2007 version of
the Lady Wildcats field hockey team seemed
to be living out “One is the loneliest
number that you’ll ever do.” After plodding
through the second part of the season with a
series of one goal wins the Lady
Wildcats were not drawing the attention of
many hockey admirers in the Commonwealth.
But the 1969 Gold Record tune never
took into account that “One” when
experienced enough times can draw a lot of
company. Through a
series of state playoff games involving
superb preparation and well-executed team
play, Coach Ann Beckley’s team used a series
of “One” score wins to close out their
season before a large supporting crowd at J.
Birney Crum Stadium in a 10:00 AM game in
Allentown. The Wildcat’s stunning 2-1
overtime victory placed the Wildcats by
themselves at the top of the PIAA AA medal
heap with elation not matched since coach
Mike Beckley’s softball team pulled off the
same feat in 2004 . Congratulations to all
players, Coach Beckley, and also assistant
coaches Kortney Loss and Janelle Loss on
being the new “pride” in Wildcat country.
